Foot Pain Q & A

What causes foot pain?

Whether it’s in the heel, ball, or arch of your foot, foot pain has many potential causes. Some of the most common causes of foot pain include:

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis — inflammation in the fascia that extends along the bottom of your foot — is a prevalent cause of heel pain. It has many potential causes, such as repetitive strain on your foot or tightness in your calf or Achilles tendon.

Neuroma

A neuroma is a bundle of thickened tissue around a nerve in your foot. Neuromas usually develop between the bones leading to your third and fourth toes.

Bone spurs

Bone spurs develop in response to repeated stress or friction. Many people develop bone spurs on their heels from repeated stress, poorly fitting shoes, or an abnormal gait.

Fractures

Each of your feet has 26 bones. While they work together to provide a stable foundation for the rest of your body, they’re still vulnerable to fracture from trauma, repetitive strain, or a sudden forceful impact.

When should I talk to a podiatrist about foot pain?

If you experience foot pain, you can try to treat it at home with rest, ice, and elevation. However, if your pain persists or gets worse instead of subsiding with rest, you should make an appointment with Dr. Saed at Podiatry Care Plus.

Other signs that you need medical treatment include severe swelling and bruising or not being able to put weight on your foot.

How is foot pain treated?

Dr. Saed begins with a thorough exam, which could include X-rays or another digital imaging study, to diagnose the cause of your foot pain. Once he understands the root cause of your pain, he creates a treatment plan to heal your foot and relieve your discomfort.

Your treatment plan may include:

  • Rest
  • Immobilization
  • Custom orthotics
  • Oral medication
  • Steroid injections

Dr. Saed also offers cold laser therapy using the Remy Class IV laser. The Remy is an FDA-cleared therapy to reduce painful inflammation. A Remy laser treatment takes just 10 minutes. Most people have weekly treatments for about 6-8 weeks.

If you have foot pain that interferes with your life, call Podiatry Care Plus today or make an appointment online for personalized treatment.
